Description:

Deacon + Richardson Architects received an exciting opportunity to rejuvenate a detached home on Ainsworth Avenue, Ovingdean. The project’s ambitious brief encompassed internal enhancements and external renovations to completely revitalize the property’s appeal.

To accomplish this vision, we adapted the existing extensions while modestly expanding the home’s footprint. This allowed us to create a highly desirable and functional layout. One key highlight of the project involves adding a new double-height entrance, which floods the once dimly lit hallway and landing with an abundance of natural light, instantly making the space feel welcoming and inviting.

On the ground floor, we crafted a seamless integration of spaces by introducing an open-plan kitchen, living, and dining area, providing a space for family members and guests to gather, interact, and enjoy each other’s company. Floor-to-ceiling glass doors further enhance this area, offering views south towards the sea. Furthermore, we extended the roof volume on the first floor, resulting in the addition of two new double bedrooms.

To meet our clients’ desire for a modern aesthetic, we gave the exterior of the house a contemporary makeover, elegantly cladding the upper floors in sleek timber to impart a sense of sophistication to the structure. Dark-coloured aluminium windows were introduced to complement the cladding, creating a pleasing contrast against the white render walls.

Our client’s eco-consciousness was evident in the incorporation of large format roof lights into a biodiverse roof at the rear of the property, infusing the interiors with additional natural light and reducing energy consumption. The new roof will also support local biodiversity.

Through meticulous planning and innovative design solutions, the project received planning permission in early 2023. We eagerly await the construction, scheduled to commence by the end of the year.
